When Ganesh Confronts the Reich: Back to Back Theatre’s Play About Stolen Symbols, Power and the Right to Speak
Australian company Back to Back Theatre has brought back to the stage one of its most acclaimed works, Ganesh Versus the Third Reich. First premiered in 2011 and subsequently seen around the world, the production has acquired renewed urgency: its latest Melbourne presentation comes ahead of performances in Paris as part of the Festival d’Automne. At the centre of the piece is the journey of the Hindu god Ganesh to Nazi Germany to reclaim the swastika — an ancient Sanskrit symbol of prosperity that was appropriated and corrupted by the Nazis. Yet the work is far more than a mythological narrative. It is constructed as a layered theatrical mechanism: alongside the myth, the audience witnesses a rehearsal process, the internal tensions of the company and questions about who has the right to tell another’s story, to speak of trauma, to represent the Other and to claim ownership of symbols.
Back to Back Theatre, based in Geelong, Australia, was founded in 1987. Its core ensemble is made up of actors with intellectual disabilities and neurodivergence. Under the artistic direction of Bruce Gladwin, who has led the company since 1999, it has become one of the world’s most significant inclusive theatre companies. It is precisely for this reason that the themes of power, representation, dependency, violence and self-determination in Ganesh Versus the Third Reich take on not an abstract but an urgently human dimension. In Paris, the production has been described as a witty and moving parable that compels audiences to rethink their assumptions about theatre and disability. A god with the head of an elephant travels through Nazi Germany, while the performers themselves question the limits of their own right to tell this story. The work exists in this tension — between myth and rehearsal, political allegory and theatre’s own self-interrogation.
In his 2026 review for The Guardian, Tim Byrne called the production one of Back to Back Theatre’s finest and most daring works. For Byrne, the return of the piece comes at a moment when its political charge feels even sharper: the world around it has changed, fears of new forms of fascism have intensified, and the story of reclaiming a stolen symbol once again reads as a statement of dignity and resistance. Australian critic Kate Mulqueen, writing in ArtsHub, described Ganesh Versus the Third Reich as theatre of “rare and mythic perfection”. She stressed that the production does not allow the spectator to remain in the safe position of a detached observer: it collapses the distance between stage and auditorium, forcing the audience to recognise its own involvement in the mechanisms of looking, judging and power.
In Europe, the production has already been presented in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Germany and France. The French theatre platform Sceneweb called it iconoclastic and one of the most compelling theatrical works to have emerged from Australia. In 2026, Ganesh Versus the Third Reich will return to the French stage: the Festival d’Automne will take place in Paris and the Île-de-France region from 11 September to 19 December.
