At the festival’s opening, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow publicly mocked Donald Trump’s attempt to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America”. Bailey invited the audience to say “Lake Ontario” together, while Chow declared that the city’s waterfront “will always be Lake Ontario”. Both remarks were met with loud applause.
The episode quickly became one of the defining stories surrounding TIFF’s opening. Canadian media placed it within the broader context of deteriorating relations between Canada and the United States. Among the key films at the start of TIFF was Being Heumann, directed by Sian Heder and centred on Judy Heumann, one of the leading figures in the American disability-rights movement. The film provided a striking backdrop to the political moment at the opening: its themes of rights, visibility and collective action proved particularly resonant in the current political climate. Heder said that the rapid erosion of rights that Americans had fought for over decades makes the film’s arrival especially timely.
