6 червня у містечку Патре́ксф’юрдур на заході Ісландії розпочався 18-й фестиваль документального кіно Skjaldborg — одна з ключових подій для національної кіноіндустрії. У центрі цьогорічної програми — також її нова стрічка The Flats, присвячена наслідкам конфлікту в Північній Ірландії, яка вже здобув головну нагороду на CPH:DOX 2024. Окрема подія фестивалю — показ ще не завершеного фільму Menningarsmyglariinn («Культурний контрабандист»), що розповідає про життя ісландського культурного критика і поета А́сгеїра Х. Інгóльфссона, який помер у січні цього року. Робота над стрічкою тривала кілька років, а її автори — давні друзі героя — нині завершують проєкт у пам’ять про нього. Honest Films and Music Till Morning: Iceland’s Leading Documentary Film Festival Kicks Off
On June 6, the town of Patreksfjörður in western Iceland welcomed the opening of the 18th Skjaldborg Documentary Film Festival — one of the country’s key events for non-fiction cinema. Over the course of three days, audiences will have the chance to watch more than 40 films, ranging from premieres to experimental works exploring themes of memory, cultural heritage, and identity. The festival opened with The Bookseller of Belfast by Italian filmmaker Alessandra Celesia, whose latest film The Flats — also featured in this year’s lineup — examines the legacy of the Northern Irish conflict. The film recently won the top prize at CPH:DOX 2024. One of the festival’s most anticipated events is the screening of the work-in-progress Menningarsmyglariinn ("The Cultural Smuggler"), a documentary dedicated to the late Icelandic cultural critic and poet Ásgeir H. Ingólfsson, who passed away in January 2025. The project, created by his close friends, has been in the making for several years and is now being completed in his memory. Skjaldborg combines documentary screenings with a vibrant and informal festival atmosphere, including a traditional fish dinner, a limbo dance party, and film-themed bingo. All screenings are free and open to the public, reinforcing the festival’s commitment to accessibility. According to local critics, the 2025 edition features one of the strongest programs in the festival’s history. Skjaldborg continues to serve as Iceland’s premier platform for documentary cinema — a space where the personal, the political, and the artistic intersect. The festival runs through June 9.
