A 1920 Piet Mondrian returns to the top end of the art market
The international art market has been stirred by the appearance of Piet Mondrian’s Composition III (1920) — a work that is coming to auction for the first time. Christie’s will offer the painting on 14 October 2026 in its 20th/21st Century Evening Sale in London during Frieze Week. It carries an estimate of £20–30 million, or around €23–35 million. The auction house describes it as the most important Mondrian to appear at a European auction since 2009. The painting comes from the collection of American modernist architect Armand P. Bartos and his wife, Celeste, and has not been seen in public for more than 25 years. Ahead of the sale, it will be shown in Zurich, Paris, New York, Hong Kong and London, according to official information from Christie’s.
The work’s significance is heightened by its date: 1920 was a pivotal year in the development of Neo-Plasticism. Following his Cubist experiments and involvement with the De Stijl movement, Mondrian was consolidating the visual language for which he would become famous: straight lines, rectangular planes and primary colours. That year, the artist produced just eight major compositions, five of which are now held by institutions including Tate, MoMA and the Stedelijk Museum. Artnet News market writer Vittoria Benzine has pointed to a renewed upswing in Mondrian’s market, while FAD Magazine founder Mark Westall argues that the importance of Composition III lies not simply in its price: the painting captures the emergence of one of modernism’s most influential visual languages.
The sale stands out for its combination of museum-level rarity, distinguished provenance and the work’s first appearance on the open market. Italian commentator Paolo Martini, writing for Adnkronos, describes it as one of the key works from the period in which Mondrian was moving towards radical geometric abstraction. The auction also has wider implications for the European art market: despite Brexit, London continues to compete with Paris for its position as the leading centre for high-value sales of modern art. The result will therefore test not only the strength of the market for Mondrian, but also London’s position within Europe’s evolving auction landscape.
About the artist. Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) was a Dutch painter, a founder of De Stijl and one of the defining figures of geometric abstraction. Moving away from his early landscapes, he developed a radically reduced visual system of vertical and horizontal lines, white space and planes of red, blue and yellow. His Neo-Plasticism influenced not only 20th-century painting but also architecture, graphic design, fashion and product design.
