Tragedy in Lisbon: the city’s legendary tourist symbol derails
On the famed Elevador da Glória tourist line, a tram derailed, claiming the lives of at least 15 people and leaving a further 18 injured. Five of the wounded are in critical condition. Among the injured is a three-year-old boy who, doctors say, is not in a life-threatening state. Operating since 1885, the Elevador da Glória is considered one of Lisbon’s signature attractions, linking Restauradores Square with the panoramic viewpoint at Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara. Hundreds of passengers, mostly tourists, travel this route every day. Eyewitnesses report that the first car began to slow due to a brake malfunction, while the second gained uncontrollable speed and crashed into a building. Among the dead are a citizen of Ukraine, a citizen of Portugal, three tourists from Germany, two from France, and a woman from Brazil. The identities of several other victims are still being established. Possible causes cited include failure of the braking system, overloading of the cars, or human error. Carris, the line’s operator, said all scheduled checks had been carried out: the last major maintenance took place in 2024 and daily inspections were performed on time. “This route has been running for 140 years and was a symbol of reliability. We must understand why this tragedy occurred,” said Lisbon’s mayor, Carlos Moedas, who declared three days of mourning. The incident has already drawn international attention, with EU leaders—including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen—offering condolences to Portugal.
