The invitation of Russian violinist Vadim Repin to Sofia has drawn international attention

Coverage in Ukrainian media emerged amid a visit by Bulgaria’s leadership to Kyiv. Reports note that the planned concert has already triggered an international response, including an open letter from the initiative Arts Against Aggression addressed to Bulgarian institutions.
Activists are calling for the event to be cancelled, pointing to Repin’s past performances supported by Russian state structures. They also highlight that his concerts have previously been cancelled in Germany and the United States following appeals from Ukrainian communities.
In Mannheim, the local philharmonic justified cancelling his performance after consultations with the Ukrainian community — a case now cited as a precedent in the ongoing debate.
Particular attention has been drawn to the concert programme, including works by Sergei Prokofiev, a composer associated with Ukraine. Critics argue that this choice is inappropriate in the current context.
Media reports also stress that Repin has not publicly condemned Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and has continued to participate in events backed by state institutions. In this context, ballerina Svetlana Zakharova is also mentioned.
There has been no official response from the concert organisers so far. At the same time, the Embassy of Ukraine in Bulgaria has called for the decision to proceed with the performance to be reconsidered.
