On social media, debates about the National Opera have been accompanied by memes, ironic comparisons with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the National Theatre, and calls for more open and democratic procedures in the cultural sector. Despite the disputes, most observers agree that the launch of the Icelandic National Opera will be a key test of the country’s cultural policy, shaping not only the institution’s own reputation but also public trust in broader reforms in the arts.
