(Arrow of the Wind: On Artists and Healers), Initiative for Practices and Visions of Radical Care

Survival Kit

Survival Kit

Survival Kit 17 Becomes the Baltic Region’s Defining Contemporary Art Event

Riga is bidding farewell to the 17th International Contemporary Art Festival Survival Kit, one of the Baltic region’s most influential annual cultural events, organised by the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art. This year’s edition, Arrow of the Wind: On Artists and Healers, abandoned the familiar language of political spectacle in favour of care, collective healing and cultural memory. Curators Elena Sorokina and Simona Markel Dvořák, working alongside the Initiative for Practices and Visions of Radical Care, brought together more than 25 artists from Latvia and abroad whose practices intersect contemporary art, ritual, mental health, folk medicine and spiritual restoration.

The festival’s curatorial vision generated the strongest response across Latvia’s cultural press. Arterritory described Survival Kit 17 as “a gentle connection” between art and lived human experience, arguing that its central concern is not therapy as a medical discipline but care as a form of social maturity. Festival founder Solvita Krese has similarly maintained that in an era shaped by war, ecological crisis and emotional exhaustion, contemporary art must cultivate critical thinking while restoring people’s capacity to care for one another. The choice of venue added a powerful symbolic layer: Riga Congress Hall, standing directly opposite the Russian Embassy, is itself being transformed from a monument of Soviet modernism into Latvia’s future national concert hall.

International critics have noted that Survival Kit 17 fundamentally redefines the role of contemporary art in the twenty-first century. According to Arterritory, the festival presents “life-affirming practices” through works rooted in forests, marshlands, the Baltic Sea and Latvian folklore as reservoirs of collective memory. Live Riga highlights Survival Kit’s distinctive identity as a festival that has continuously reclaimed abandoned urban buildings since 2009, turning them into spaces for cultural dialogue. This year’s combination of site-specific installations, performances, debates, the experimental Healing Nightclub and participatory public programmes has established Survival Kit 17 as one of Europe’s most compelling contemporary art festivals of autumn 2026.
