In December 2025, the Winterlights festival became the country’s central cultural and social event. The capital was transformed into a large-scale public space of light art, music, performances and Christmas markets, spreading across the city’s key squares — Place d’Armes, Place de la Constitution, Place de Paris and the historic centre. A distinctive feature of Christmas celebrations in Luxembourg, clearly reflected during Winterlights, is the blending of several cultural traditions — Luxembourgish, French and German. This is evident not only in the multilingual nature of the events, but also in the programme itself: carols and festive music are performed in different languages, theatrical readings are held for children and adults, and intimate concerts of classical and contemporary music take place. Within the framework of Winterlights, particular emphasis is placed on inclusivity. Events are free of charge or accessible for a symbolic fee, charitable initiatives are organised, and part of the markets operates with the participation of social enterprises and local craftspeople. Luxembourgish media emphasise that the Christmas period in the country is traditionally seen as a time of civic solidarity rather than mere consumption. Another important local characteristic is the close connection between the festivities and the city’s historic setting. Light installations and cultural events are integrated into the architecture of the Old Town and its fortifications, which are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
