Participants in the protest were dressed in costumes inspired by the 18th-century French royal court, evoking the image of Marie Antoinette. They held placards reading “Let them eat cake,” alluding to social inequality and the rising cost of living in the United States. The demonstration was organised by the movements Free DC, which advocates for expanded political rights for Washington residents, and Hands Off the Arts, which campaigns to protect cultural institutions from political interference. The film was acquired by Amazon for around $75 million, making it one of the most expensive documentary purchases in the history of cinema. Critics, however, note that the production has attracted more attention because of the protests surrounding it than for its own artistic merits.
