Pope Francis: light before silence
Martin Scorsese has produced a new documentary titled “Aldeas – A New Story”, a film that will forever hold a special place in cinematic history. It features the final in-depth on-camera interview with Pope Francis, as well as personal conversations between the directors and the Pontiff. The premiere of the film is set to take place after the Pope’s passing on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. The documentary focuses on the work of the international non-profit organization Scholas Occurrentes, founded by Pope Francis in 2013 to promote a “culture of encounter” among young people. As part of the project, young individuals from Indonesia, The Gambia, and Italy create short films that are screened in local cinemas in their respective countries. The film was directed by Clare Tavernor and Johnny Shipley, with production supported by Scorsese’s team. Pope Francis was a lifelong admirer of cinema and made history as the first Pontiff to appear in a feature film, playing himself in Beyond the Sun (2016). His life inspired numerous documentary projects, including Pope Francis: A Man of His Word by Wim Wenders. Francis was also known for his love of classic Italian and European cinema, counting La Strada (1954), Rome, Open City (1945), and Babette’s Feast (1987) among his favorite films.
