25 грудня у кінотеатрах Кіпру виходить нова історична драма «Каподістріас» — біографічний фільм, присвячений життю першого губернатора незалежної Греції графа Іоанніса Каподістріаса (1776-1881). Стрічку покажуть у всіх основних кінозалах острова, зокрема в мережах K-Cineplex, Rio та Pantheon. Фільм переносить глядача на початок XIX століття та розповідає про політичний і моральний шлях Каподістріаса після визволення Греції від османського панування. Образ державного діяча, дипломата й реформатора втілив актор Антоніс Мір’янґос. Сценарій картини написав сам Смарагдіс, вибудовуючи оповідь як історію служіння, жертовності та усвідомленого вибору між особистим щастям і відповідальністю перед країною. Світова прем’єра фільму відбулася наприкінці листопада в Нью-Йорку, в Museum of the Moving Image, за участі міністерки культури Греції Ліни Мендоні та Наталії Каподістріас — останньої нащадки історичного діяча, яка також з’являється у стрічці. У фільмі з’являються ключові постаті європейської та грецької історії, зокрема Клеменс фон Меттерніх, Теодорос Колокотроніс, Маврокордатоc і Мандо Маврогенус. Музику до картини написав Мінос Матсас.

Cyprus Awaits the Premiere of Yiannis Smaragdis’s Epic Drama Kapodistrias
On 25 December, a new historical drama Kapodistrias will be released in cinemas across Cyprus. The biographical film is dedicated to the life of Ioannis Kapodistrias (1776–1831), the first Governor of independent Greece. The film will screen in all major cinemas on the island, including the K-Cineplex, Rio and Pantheon chains. Set in the early 19th century, the film traces Kapodistrias’s political and moral journey following Greece’s liberation from Ottoman rule. The role of the statesman, diplomat and reformer is played by Antonis Myriangos. The screenplay was written by director Yiannis Smaragdis himself, shaping the narrative as a story of public service, sacrifice and the conscious choice between personal happiness and responsibility to the nation.
The world premiere took place in late November in New York at the Museum of the Moving Image, attended by Greece’s Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni and Natalia Kapodistrias, the last descendant of the historical figure, who also appears in the film. The cast features key figures from European and Greek history, including Klemens von Metternich, Theodoros Kolokotronis, Alexandros Mavrokordatos and Manto Mavrogenous. The film’s score was composed by Minos Matsas.
Yiannis Smaragdis is a Greek film director and screenwriter renowned for large-scale biographical and historical films devoted to major figures in modern Greek history and culture. His work combines epic storytelling, patriotic themes and a distinctive visual style. Smaragdis gained wide international recognition with films such as El Greco, Cavafy and God Loves Caviar, in which he consistently explores themes of personal sacrifice, spiritual choice and historical responsibility.
