У Фінляндії відзначають сторіччя з дня народження Олаві Лану (1925–2015) — одного з піонерів сучасного екологічного мистецтва. З цієї нагоди в Музеї візуального мистецтва Malva в місті Лахті відкрилася масштабна виставка «Muodonmuutoksia» («Перевтілення»), де роботи митця експонуються поруч із творами сучасних художників з усього світу. Лану, який розпочинав як живописець, здобув міжнародне визнання ще у 1970-х, зокрема після участі у Венеційській бієнале (1978). Його монументальні скульптури, що нагадують людські фігури й органічно зливаються з природним ландшафтом, стали знаковими для фінського публічного простору. В Лахті йому присвячено цілий скульптурний парк, а в центрі міста є площа, названа на його честь. Виставка в Malva демонструє близько двадцяти творів Лану, серед яких — і ранні роботи 1960-х, і пізні масштабні інсталяції. Особливої уваги заслуговують об'єкти, які художник створював із природних матеріалів просто неба — час, мох і погодні умови ставали співтворцями його мистецтва. Частину таких тимчасових інсталяцій представлено у вигляді документальних світлин. Олаві Лану був не лише новатором у матеріалі та формі, а й глибоко осмислював роль природи в мистецтві. Його підхід виявився напрочуд актуальним у добу кліматичної кризи та переосмислення стосунків людини з довкіллям. Виставка триватиме в Malva до кінця літа.
Art That Breathes with Moss: 100 Years of Olavi Lanu in a Nature-Blending Exhibition
Finland is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Olavi Lanu (1925–2015), one of the pioneers of contemporary environmental art. To mark the occasion, the Malva Museum of Visual Arts in Lahti has opened a large-scale exhibition titled Muodonmuutoksia ("Transformations"), where Lanu’s works are displayed alongside those of contemporary artists from around the world. Originally trained as a painter, Lanu gained international recognition in the 1970s, particularly after his participation in the 1978 Venice Biennale. His monumental sculptures, which resemble human figures and seamlessly merge with the natural landscape, have become iconic in Finland’s public art scene. In Lahti, a sculpture park is dedicated to him, and a central city square bears his name. The Malva exhibition showcases around twenty of Lanu’s works, including both early pieces from the 1960s and later large-scale installations. Particularly noteworthy are the outdoor works he created using natural materials, where time, moss, and weather played a role as co-creators. Some of these ephemeral installations are presented through documentary photographs. Olavi Lanu was not only an innovator in material and form but also deeply reflected on nature’s role in art. His approach feels especially relevant today, in an era of climate crisis and a growing need to rethink humanity’s relationship with the environment. The exhibition will run at Malva until the end of summer.
