The world celebrates the 120th anniversary of James Joyce's Ulysses
The 120th anniversary of James Joyce's novel Ulysses was celebrated in Dublin at The Bloomsday Festival for a week. It is interesting that Joyce himself first mentioned this holiday a hundred years ago, but it has been widely publicised since 1954. The book had a complicated history, as it was banned in the United States until 1934, in England until 1936, and in Joyce's native Ireland it was not available until the mid-1960s. Now Bloomsday will be celebrated around the world.Joyce immortalised one day in the life of Leopold Bloom, one of the main characters of the novel, dated 16 June 1904, in his 732-page work. The work tells the story of a day in Bloom's life, his thoughts, and many other characters, real and fictional. It is a recognised fact that the significance of Ulysses in the twentieth century cannot be overestimated, as it indirectly influenced all subsequent literature, in particular the attitude to the modernist stream-of-consciousness technique.Bloomsday celebrations take place in a variety of formats, including readings, performances, walking tours and concerts. Dublin is immersed in its ancient historical times - its residents dress up as characters in Edwardian fashion. A characteristic element of their clothing is a straw boat hat, which was worn by many in Joyce's time, including the writer himself.
