The International Literature Festival (ILFD) in Dublin is Ireland’s largest literary event, bringing together leading authors from around the world since 1998. Renowned writers, poets, playwrights, lyricists, non-fiction authors, and screenwriters gather each year to share their stories, inspire audiences, and expand readers’ horizons. This year, special attention is drawn to the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian historian and Harvard professor Serhii Plokhy presents his new book Chernobyl Roulette, which recounts the events of the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, when Russian troops seized the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The occupation lasted 35 days. Plokhy describes the courage of Ukrainian plant workers who, risking their lives, stayed on shift for weeks instead of days to prevent a new nuclear disaster. This is not just a factual chronicle, but an emotional, haunting, and deeply human story of fear, responsibility, and heroism. Another major voice at the festival is American journalist Stephanie Baker, whose new book Punishing Putin explores how the West responded to Russian aggression not just with weapons, but with financial warfare. Baker, who reported from Moscow in the 1990s, provides a profound analysis of Russia’s economic transformation, the rise of oligarchy, and the sanctions imposed after the war began. Her book is a gripping chronicle of economic resistance — from the seizure of yachts and freezing of financial flows to export bans on technology and pressure on elites — all turning into powerful tools of influence. Baker reveals the behind-the-scenes decisions that launched a new era of economic diplomacy and reshaped the geopolitical map of the world.
