This match attracted the attention of not only the chess community but also a wide audience on social media.
Gukesh played the white side and held parity with Carlsen for a long time. However, at the end of the game, the current world champion made a fatal mistake (52...Ne2+??), after which Gukesh restored material balance and stopped the pawn's passage. In a fit of frustration, Carlsen hit the table - a moment that instantly went viral on the Internet. He immediately apologised to his opponent and left the room without the traditional press zone.
Gukesh himself later joked that he ‘laughed for ten minutes’ while watching the memes from this episode. Among the most popular was a joke about a cat on a chessboard that ‘jumps’ after hitting the table. Other grandmasters and viewers couldn't resist making comments like ‘Gukesh has earned more internet bonuses than Carlsen himself’. There were also serious assessments: ‘Magnus's reaction shows that even the strongest are under incredible pressure’, ‘This episode reminds us how emotional classical chess can be at the highest level’.
The game was played within a time-controlled format of 120 minutes per game plus a 10-second increment from move 41. A victory in the classic game gave 3 points, a draw led to Armageddon with 10 minutes for White against 7 minutes for Black (Black has a draw advantage). It is this regulation that creates additional tension at key moments.
As a result, Magnus' defeat of the young world champion turned into a real sensation. Dommaraju Gukesh demonstrated endurance and ingenuity, while this incident illustrates how modern chess combines deep strategy with powerful emotional outbursts.
