Paavo Järvi Cancels China Concert Over Orchestra’s Ties to Russia
The Estonian Festival Orchestra, conducted by Paavo Järvi, cancelled a concert scheduled for 23 October in the Chinese city of Wuxi. The decision could cost the ensemble hundreds of thousands of euros. The reason was the local symphony orchestra’s links to Russian musical institutions, including tours in Russia and joint performances with the Russian National Orchestra.
In autumn 2025, the Wuxi Symphony Orchestra toured Novosibirsk, Moscow and St Petersburg. In Moscow, the Chinese musicians performed alongside the Russian National Orchestra. The tour was part of the Russian-Chinese Years of Culture programme. In 2024, the Wuxi ensemble had also taken part in a joint concert with the Russian orchestra titled Hello, Friend!
The Estonian musicians learned about these connections shortly before the scheduled performance, while on their Asian tour. After discussing the situation, they unanimously decided not to take part in the concert in its planned joint format. Järvi and the orchestra’s management supported their decision.
Following the cancellation, Järvi reflected on the different ways cultural cooperation with Russia is perceived in different countries. He noted that British, Korean and German musicians often regard joint performances primarily as musical collaboration, whereas Estonia’s historical experience and geographical proximity to Russia give the issue a different significance.
“We have a different history, and we are closer to Russia,” the conductor explained.
