Крім того, низку жіночих костюмів охрестили як «голлівудську фантазію» — вони були або надто відвертими, або прикрашеними деталями, які не мають жодного стосунку до середньовічної моди. Громадська ініціатива закликає створити наглядову раду за участю істориків та етнографів, яка б затверджувала програму заходу та контролювала історичну точність костюмів, постановок і атрибутики. Також пропонують обмежити кількість комерційних точок і впровадити обов’язкову культурну підготовку для всіх учасників.
San Marino Prepares for Medieval Days: Between History, Controversies, and a Tourist Boom
From July 25 to 27, 2025, the historic center of San Marino will transform into a medieval town as the Republic hosts the 28th edition of one of its most important cultural events — Giornate Medioevali. This annual celebration of history, theater, and traditional culture has become the microstate’s main tourist attraction, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each year. For three days, the streets and squares of San Marino will be filled with costumed parades, theatrical reenactments, medieval markets, and music. This year’s program, led by Giuseppe Del Barna, includes new elements — night fire shows, workshops for adults and children, and expanded thematic zones for a deeper immersion into the spirit of the era. Despite the event’s popularity, it has increasingly become a target of criticism from local residents, historians, and cultural heritage activists. The main complaints concern the excessive commercialization of the festival and the overwhelming presence of sponsors, which critics say “dilutes the historical context of the event.” A particular controversy arose over the 2024 knights’ procession, featuring crosses styled after the Crusaders, which organizers were accused of using unethically due to their religious symbolism. Additionally, several women’s costumes were labeled “Hollywood fantasies” — either too revealing or adorned with details unrelated to medieval fashion. A public initiative calls for the creation of a supervisory board involving historians and ethnographers to approve the event program and monitor the historical accuracy of costumes, performances, and props. They also propose limiting the number of commercial stalls and introducing mandatory cultural training for all participants.
