Auteur Cinema Reclaims the Cannes Spotlight
One of the defining moments of this year’s competition has been the arrival of Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s new feature, All of a Sudden (Soudain in French). For the director behind the Oscar-winning Drive My Car, the film marks his first French-language production — and already one of the most fiercely discussed premieres of the festival. The Times critic Kevin Maher described the picture as “one of the most emotionally precise works unveiled at Cannes this year”, while Richard Brody of The New Yorker called it “Hamaguchi’s most ambitious and deeply humane film to date”. Writing for The Wrap, Steve Pond noted the film’s almost hypnotic rhythm, observing that “silence carries as much weight as narrative”. Running close to three hours, All of a Sudden is an intimate meditation on ageing, illness and emotional proximity. Set inside a French care home, the story follows the institution’s director as she forms an unexpected bond with a Japanese theatre director facing terminal cancer. Their encounters gradually evolve into a quiet reflection on fear, memory and human dignity.
Hamaguchi co-wrote the screenplay with French-Japanese screenwriter Léa Le Dimna. The film draws partial inspiration from the published correspondence between Japanese philosopher Makiko Miyano and anthropologist Maho Isono. The cast includes Virginie Efira, Tao Okamoto and Kyozo Nagatsuka.
Beyond the screenings, Cannes remains inseparable from its social theatre. Among the week’s most talked-about events was the premiere of the sci-fi thriller Her Private Hell. In a report for Page Six, journalist Sarah Jones described the screening as one of the festival’s most visually striking evenings, with appearances from Halsey, Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton on the red carpet. Yet even Cannes fashion appears to have shifted tone this year. In a broader analysis of festival style, The Times of India described Cannes 2026 as an era of “controlled glamour”, where celebrities increasingly favour restraint over spectacle. Bella Hadid opted for a refined Prada silhouette, while Demi Moore appeared in minimalist Jacquemus.
Elsewhere, discussions around artificial intelligence have emerged as an unexpected undercurrent of the festival. During one of the industry conversations, American director Steven Soderbergh argued that AI “will transform not only the production of cinema, but the very notion of authorship itself”, according to The Independent. Conversations about artificial intelligence now extend far beyond official panels, surfacing everywhere from press conferences to private gatherings aboard yachts anchored off the Cannes coastline.
