London to host large-scale immersive performance tracing 75 years of youth culture
A major one-day event, You Are Here, will take place at the Southbank Centre in London on 3 May. The large-scale immersive theatrical project explores the history of British youth culture since the Second World War. It is created and directed by Danny Boyle, known for Trainspotting (1996) and Slumdog Millionaire (2008).
The project marks the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Royal Festival Hall, a central venue of the 1951 Festival of Britain. Conceived not as a traditional performance but as a moving, participatory experience, the event will transform the Southbank site into a journey through different stages of cultural history — from the subcultures of the 1950s to contemporary artistic practices.
With around 1,000 performers and more than 10,000 visitors expected, the programme will reference key moments in British culture, from teddy boys and Lovers’ Rock to punk, the aesthetics of Ziggy Stardust, rave culture, spoken word and Britpop. Organisers describe the structure as a sequence of “five beats” combining music, fashion and club culture. According to Boyle, the project responds to the growing dependence of modern life on algorithms. He aims to restore a sense of unpredictability, which he sees as a driving force behind major cultural shifts. The director emphasises that many influential artistic movements emerged from chaotic and often marginal environments before becoming part of the cultural canon.
The event forms the centrepiece of Southbank Centre’s year-long programme celebrating its history and its role as a key platform for the development of youth culture in the United Kingdom.
Danny Boyle (born 1956) is a British director, producer and theatre-maker, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary film and performing arts. He won the Academy Award for Best Director in 2009 for Slumdog Millionaire, directed the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, and has received numerous international film awards.
