Британський актор Ентоні Гопкінс у віці 88 років підписав контракт із лейблом Decca Classics і готує до випуску альбом власної оркестрової музики Life Is a Dream. Anthony Hopkins to release orchestral album more than six decades in the making
British actor Anthony Hopkins, 88, has signed with Decca Classics and is preparing to release Life Is a Dream, an album of his own orchestral music. The record is due on 21 August 2026. Its first single, Bracken Road, from the piano-and-orchestra suite 1947, was unveiled on 10 July. The album features 12 works composed by Hopkins at different stages of his life, from the early 1960s to the present day. The recordings were made by the Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of the internationally renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel. The pianist Sergio Tiempo and cellist Gregorio Nieto perform the solo parts, while the Bach Choir and the choristers of Winchester Cathedral also contribute to the project.
Hopkins has described music as his “first ambition” and said that some of the compositions had remained with him for decades. He began playing the piano at the age of four, performed works by Beethoven and Chopin as a child, and wrote music for local theatre productions during his teenage years. “My whole life has been a dream. Signing with Decca is the honour of a lifetime,” he said.
Wales is one of the album’s central themes. Bracken Road draws on Hopkins’s childhood memories of Margam — its streets, meadows, farmland and the mountains surrounding his family home. He first conceived the melody in 1963, while working at the Liverpool Playhouse and improvising at the piano before rehearsals. Its blues-inflected sound was inspired by the Harry James Orchestra and Jackie Gleason’s orchestral ballads, while the arrangement also contains echoes of Edward Elgar’s First Symphony.
Another work, My Fatherland, is based on traditional Welsh melodies and dedicated to Hopkins’s father. The actor and composer has said that the piece was intended as a tribute to his modest background: “I am my father’s son — a baker’s son.” The compositions Stella Aria and Tara are associated with Hopkins’s wife and niece respectively, while other parts of the album evoke his childhood cinema, his native Port Talbot, memory and the passage of time.
Gustavo Dudamel, one of the world’s most prominent contemporary conductors, said Hopkins’s music possessed the same emotional depth and narrative power as his acting. In Dudamel’s view, Hopkins composes “with the heart of a storyteller and the instincts of a poet”. Early critical responses to Bracken Road, however, have been more reserved. British critic John J. Jacob described the piece as sentimental and polished, with a style closer to accessible cinematic music aimed at a broad audience.
Life Is a Dream will be Hopkins’s second major album of original classical compositions, following Composer, released in 2012. The new recording will also include his best-known work, And the Waltz Goes On, written in 1964 and later popularised by André Rieu and his orchestra.
